Northwest YMCA Active Older Adults

SilverSneakers cardio class

The YMCA takes pride in being a place for people of all ages, abilities and incomes. We value each and every member of our community, and older adults are some of our most involved members and participants. We have many activities designed to keep you active and strengthen your spirit, mind and body. New friends and new opportunities enrich your life, and at the Northwest YMCA you will have plenty of both!

SilverSneakers
basketball is a great way to stay in shape while humbling players in their 20sThe YMCA of Southern Arizona is proud to partner with SilverSneakers, a fitness program for older adults who belong to participating Medicare health plans or Medicare Supplement carriers.  If you qualify for SilverSneakers, your insurance company pays for your YMCA membership!  Membership entitles you to complete use of our facilities, including the pool, weight room, cardio rooms and all of our group exercise classes.

Additionally, we offer specific SilverSneakers exercise classes that are designed for active older adults. These classes help you improve your strength, flexibility, balance and overall health. Classes are currently held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:10am to 11:00am, and Wednesdays from 11:10am to 12:00pm. Additional aerobic classes are available, so for specific class times and descriptions you can view our Group Exercise Schedule. Even if you are not eligible for SilverSneakers you are still welcome to attend SilverSneakers classes.

Currently, the following supplemental health insurance plans are covering your SilverSneakers membership at the YMCA: AARP Medicare Complete, SecureHorizons, PacifiCare, Health Net, Health Choice and Desert Canyon Community Care. To enroll, fill out the registration forms and bring them (along with your health insurance card) to the YMCA and we’ll get you started on the road to health!

Young at Heart
Young at Heart is a program that provides social activities for our senior members who may or may not be members through the SilverSneakers program.  Activities include potlucks, fieldtrips, bingo, ice cream socials, lectures and much, much more.

Monthly Activities
Bingo – 1st Monday of each month at 11:15am in the Community Room.
Potluck – 3rd Monday of every month at 11:15am in the Community Room.
Bowling at Fiesta Lanes – Every Wednesday 11:30am-1:30pm.

Group Exercise Classes
The Northwest YMCA has a wide variety of Group Exercise Classes that are suitable for the Active Older Adult.  Our low intensity YMCA Senior Aerobics is a great class to focus on improving strength, flexibility and balance. Yoga is a great class to improve flexibility and strength without causing impact on joints and bones. Check our Group Exercise Schedule for specific class days and times.

Y Personal Fitness
The Northwest YMCA Personal Fitness team offers guidance, motivation, and structure to help you begin and continue with a fitness routine leading to a more physically active lifestyle. When you join, we offer a free orientation to assess your fitness needs and goals, and get you on a program that will be structured specifically for you.  Throughout the progression of your routine we will update your personalized program in order to help you meet all of your fitness goals.  A 12 week personalized program is included with your membership, and is a great way for Active Older Adults to become familiar with an exercise program and help prevent injuries.
