Northwest YMCA Health & Well-Being

This is just a small part of the Northwest fitness area

The Northwest YMCA Pima County Community Center features a state of the art cardio wellness center and free weight room that is open during all facility hours.  It includes 32 treadmills, 22 elliptical trainers, 22 recumbent/upright cycles, stair climbers, rowers, 3 different circuits of strength training equipment (Cybex, LifeFitness and Magnum), over 1,500 pounds of free weights and an extremely helpful staff.  Children 9 to 15 are welcome to use the cardio wellness center after completing the free youth orientation, as long as they are accompanied by a parent.  We offer many group exercise programs, personalized fitness programs and FitLinxx, your computerized training partner. 

Group Exercise Classes
Group Exercise classes are available free for all members. We have a variety of classes for all fitness levels and ages. We instruct all of our classes for every level (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Certified instructors lead well-rounded workouts which include stretching, strength training and aerobic exercise. Check out our calendar to find your next class!

  • Cardio & Tone - This class features a strong cardiovascular component with warm-up.  We perform various exercises focused on toning all major muscles groups.  Stretching is incorporated to enhance flexibility.
  • Cardio Combo - This class will take you to a new level of fitness!  We challenge your body’s stamina, strength and cardio respiratory system.  An intermediate to advanced level of fitness is recommended. 
  • CardioFit - CardioFit includes fun, easy-to-follow exercises to increase cardiovascular and muscular strength endurance. Ideal for members wanting a low-impact cardio workout combined with strength and optional floor work stretching. Perfect for a safe, energizing routine to improve your heart and overall body conditioning.
  • Cardio Kickboxing - This high intensity workout includes cardiovascular and resistance training.  The focus is on cardiovascular training and reshaping the lower body using strong movement to enhance strength, composition and flexibility.  A relaxation stretch finishes off this session.
  • Group Cycling - This exciting indoor cycling program incorporates the science of cycling with motivational techniques for effective aerobic and anaerobic training. Safe and effective.   For the beginner or advanced exerciser.  Workout clothes, towel, and water bottle are required.  Seat gel pack or appropriate riding shorts are recommended.
  • Cycling Plus - The same exciting indoor cycling program with extra added.  This class incorporates a variety of equipment which includes; weights, bands, a ball, a body bar and more. Bring a towel and water. Recommended for intermediate to advance levels.  A gel seat pack (or appropriate riding shorts) is recommended for comfort.       
  • Just Aerobics - This class is a low impact aerobics class for all levels of fitness. This class will get your  heart pumping and your body moving. At times this class will incorporate weights. No mat work.
  • Pilates Mat - Pilates is a method of body conditioning designed to stretch and strengthen the body through a series of unique exercises. It was developed by Joseph H. Pilates to help veterans returning from the First World War.  Benefits include strengthening and toning the muscles while improving posture, flexibility and balance. A workout for body and mind. 
  • YMCA Senior Aerobics - This is a low impact aerobics class focusing on enhancing strength, flexibility and balance.
  • Silver Sneakers II Cardio Circuit - This class focuses on cardiovascular and muscular endurance conditioning for the advanced participant. Available to all YMCA members and  SilverSneakers Fitness Program members.
  • SilverSplash - SilverSplash offers LOTS of fun and shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance.No swimming ability is required, and a special SilverSneakers kickboard is used to develop strength, balance and coordination.
  • Sculpting Mix - This class focuses on sculpting and toning with high repetitions and intensity. We also include a Power Abs workout. Your workout ends with basic yoga and stretching.
  • Sports Conditioning - This class offers a high intensity workout which will challenge your body’s stamina and cardio respiratory system.  We incorporate sports moves and strength conditioning.  Intermediate to advanced level of fitness recommended. 
  • Step Aerobics - Add variation to your workout!  This step class utilizes 4", 6", or 8" steps.  People of every fitness level are welcome for this fun and energetic workout.
  • Strength 'n Motion - This class is primarily designed for participants 65 and older, but all Active Older Adults are welcome.  The goal of this class is to develop and maintain the strength and endurance required by the activities of daily life. We use the Body Motion line of equipment, which helps you to improve your range of motion with just your own body weight. A wellness instructor facilitates this class in the cardio-wellness room.  Please sign up with the instructor 5 minutes prior to start of class.
  • Yoga -YMCA yoga is designed to work with people at varying levels of experience in a way that is meditative, relaxing, safe and strengthening. Classes are ongoing, so anyone may join at any time and practice within their own level of comfort. Please join us for a mind, body and spirit experience.
  • Yoga Ball - Designed to give participants an introduction to both yoga and use of the Stability Ball.  Class focuses on balance, strength and flexibility.  A challenging workout for all fitness levels.
  • Youth & Teen Cardio Kickboxing - This beginning class combines elements of boxing, martial arts and cardio to provide overall physical conditioning and toning. Cardio kickboxing does not involve physical contact. The emphasis is on strength and flexibility with stretching at the end.  
  • Zumba - This is a high energy class that incorporates all types of Latin moves and dances. You will get your heart rate up!


Y Personal Fitness
Fitness staffThe Northwest YMCA Personal Fitness team offers guidance, motivation, and structure to help you begin and continue with a fitness routine leading to a more physically active lifestyle. When you join, we offer a free orientation to assess your fitness needs and goals, and get you on a program that is structured specifically for you.  Throughout the progression of your routine we will update your personalized program in order to help you meet all of your fitness goals.  Your orientation can include FitLinxx, a program that will guide you through each exercise, record your workout, and help you monitor your progress. To make an appointment with a fitness trainer or to learn more about the Fitlinxx program, stop by the Courtesy Counter or ask to speak to a trainer.

FitLinxx
FitLinxx is a computerized system that attaches directly to existing fitness equipment, adding an extraordinary "intelligence" dimension to the workout experience for the first time. Fitlinxx learns users' programs, coaches them individually through their workout for better form, safety and confidence during every exercise, and tracks their progress over time. On strength equipment, Fitlinxx appears as an easy-to-read touch-screen display that is attached to the machine. For cardiovascular equipment, each machine's  existing console is simply networked to Fitlinxx. Users simply tap their PIN to display their targets. Fitlinxx then coaches them on speed, form, heart rate, etc., and tracks the workout session - every rep, set and step.

Personal Training
A personal trainer provides motivation, variety, safety, efficiency and expertise to your workout routine.  The Northwest YMCA employs certified personal trainers from National Associations.  Our experienced team of trainers will work with you one-on-one to help you get the most out of your personalized workout!

Purchase 1 hour of training for $40, five 1 hour sessions for $175 or ten 1 hour sessions for $300. You can also purchase time in 30 minute blocks. Get one 30 minute session for $30, three for $85 or six for $150.

1 of the many exercises you can do with the GRAVITY SystemGRAVITY System
The GRAVITY System is an innovative exercise machine based on a unique concept.  By using the participant’s own body weight to create resistance, the system is able to provide an individualized workout that can progressively increase in intensity as strength and performance improve.  The design of the dynamic pulley system allows for enhanced muscle development, core integration and increased joint range of motion.  

GRAVITYGroup is a series of high intensity muscular endurance exercises that are designed to provide time-efficient and effective full body workouts.  The 30 minute classes focus on muscle isolation and integration, challenging muscular strength and endurance while including unique core and stretching exercises.
