Remember the magical days at Camp when you made new friends, gained some independence, learned new songs and skits, and looked up to your counselors as role models and leaders? If so, the YMCA has a great opportunity for you to be a role model for youth this summer who attend Camp in Oracle, Arizona. The YMCA is looking for mentors, role models, and leaders to spend their summer at Camp and help youth gain confidence as some of them experience their first week away from home while they learn to make new friends and discover their talents. We are seeking dedicated, motivated, energetic staff members to be role models for the campers to help them learn and grow in their time at sleep away camp. As a role model, counselors will be responsible for the general safety, development, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group. Counselors will also be providing supervision, direction, unending enthusiasm and positive reinforcement. The incumbent must be focused on the campers having a positive experience and have an eye for details in keeping the grounds clean and safe because first impressions matter with our parents, campers and staff. It is of paramount importance to be a patient leader, who is able to lead by example and teach campers the importance of the YMCA core values: Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility. Counselors will need to understand, follow, and enforce safety guidelines and emergency procedures associated with the camp program. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and being aware of their whereabouts at all times. Counselors must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which may include crafts, nature hikes, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, archery, Family Night, swimming, team building initiatives, Low Ropes/High Ropes course, building campfires (weather permitting), physical games, and activities. In addition to supervisory duties, each cabin counselor will teach in many of the camp program areas. All staff members are expected to take an active role in maintaining facilities, cabins and program areas by helping out with daily chores and teaching the campers the importance of keeping Camp clean and beautiful. All counselors must have current CPR/1st Aid certification or complete first aid, and CPR/AED training to obtain certifications. Qualified applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
